Breakthrough: A Mother’s Unwavering Love

Breakthrough

Breakthrough: A Mother’s Unwavering Love

The depth of a mother’s love is beyond measure. Based on true events, this film takes us to a roller coaster ride of emotions of a mother. The story opens with 14-year-old John intentionally doing and undoing things like a typical teenager. He gives his breakfast to the dog. Then he calls his dad by the first name and didn’t do his assignment on family history. These scenes show how a concerned mother makes an effort to connect to her teenage son.

After winning a basketball game in school, John went to a sleepover. The next morning, the three boys played over the frozen Missouri Lake despite knowing it’s not safe there. The plot took a turn when the ice suddenly cracks and the three boys fell on cold water. The two managed to emerge but John fell deeper.  Rescuers came to get John’s body. These scenes leave us to thinking that the boy could have avoided the accident if he heeded to the man’s warning. Stubbornness leads to a reckless tragedy.

Upon reaching the hospital, Joyce got confronted by the Doctor who explained their efforts to revive him and yet, John has no pulse for several minutes now.  She enters the room and cries out to God to send the Holy Spirit to breathe life into John. She touched his feet and miraculously, his pulse starts ticking again. The Doctor says John may become severely impaired once he wakens. Joyce showed us that no matter what the Doctor says, she keeps her faith in prayer that God listens to a mother’s plea.

There are reflective moments in this story. Joyce didn’t approve of the new pastor Jason and the changes he’s done at church service especially including rap music during praise and worship. Even so, Jason was the first person to comfort her in times of distress. He was by her side when she needed a friend the most. Sometimes, we too misjudge persons in our lives because we do not favor their ways. Later on, we find ourselves accepting them for who they are. The best part is when we realize that the one we used to frown upon turns out as a compassionate soul after all like Jason to Joyce.

John’s rescuer claims himself as an unbeliever. However, he believes he heard a voice when he plunged in the cold lake that led him to find the boy’s body. When they meet again, he told John that if God has plans for him, it may be something pretty special. The accident turned out as a life-changing experience both for the man who erstwhile thought there was no God and the boy who saw how many people have extended their help and prayers for a miracle.

While a mother’s love is a powerful force on Earth, God’s love for us makes a miracle possible.

Same Kind of Different as Me

Same Kind of Different as Me

Same Kind of Different as Me: Breaking Barriers to Personal Healing

This faith-centric drama film Same Kind of Different as Me tells us that we are all homeless just working our way home. The story was based on true events that happened in the lives of couple Ron and Debbie. What made their story inspiring was how amending a marriage strain has helped them form an unconventional friendship with a broken homeless man.

The story began with Ron narrating about having a big house with a broken home. On their 19th year in marriage, he got enamored over another woman. Like any wife, Debbie was angry and hurt upon knowing that her husband betrayed her. In a heartbreaking confrontation scene, she asked Ron to call the girl. Debbie tells her she doesn’t blame her and that she forgives her. While most of us find it difficult to forgive those who wronged us, Debbie’s action reminds us of the meaning of forgiveness both to the offender and offended. Debbie freed Ron’s girl from guilt and herself from the emotional pain it entails.

As a way of making up to her, Ron went with Debbie to a kitchen where she volunteers to cook and feed homeless people. He was adamant to join her but eventually conceded in helping serve free meals.

At one time, an enraged man came hitting the glass wall panel. Debbie coaxed Ron to give him food on the table. The small talk led to a friendship that goes beyond social status, race or color. Denver opened up to Ron past events in his life where he was treated like a slave. The African-American boy became a man who behaved badly because of the cruelty his circumstances had him go through.

There are many kinds of Denver around us that look rough and tough on the outside but harboring deep-seated wounds on the inside. Compassion is a way for us to show God’s love so we can lead them to cross their bridges towards redemption. As Denver says, the journey of the homeless may often begin in a hopeless case but it doesn’t have to end there.

There are several thought-provoking scenes throughout this film. Ron harbored ill-feelings against his dad. Both father and son misjudged each other due to lack of communication. Debbie became vulnerable to her emotions after finding out she has Cancer and Ron’s dad was insensitive to her feelings at one point. These scenes teach us about understanding the feelings that comes between spoken words.

Ron, Debbie and Denver’s story showed us their individual struggles and having to connect one’s life to another. We may make life-changing decisions that create a ripple effect in the lives of those we touch. Denver’s outlook in life changed before Debbie passed away. Ron continued her dream of having a place for the homeless.

Everybody may be different but the same kind of different as me.

The Least of These: The Life Story of Missionary Graham Staines

The Least of These

The Least of These: The Life Story of Missionary Graham Staines

This film presented events in the life of Graham Staines, an Australian medical missionary who brought his family to a remote village in India. His intention was to serve the lepers and to build a home for them.

In the late 1990s, there are governmental laws against Christians who use inducements to make new converts. Indian journalist Manav moved to the town to uncover speculations about Graham. In exchange, his editor promised to pay for his wife’s hospital bills after the birth of their daughter.

Manav’s motive was to expose and pin Graham for doing something illegal. To his amazement, what he saw was a selfless act of serving the people with leprosy. Graham showed Manav the meaning of God’s compassion and love for the lepers.

However, Manav later found out that the leper on the bus works for Graham at a hospital-home that he built for the lepers. How ironic that a foreigner cared more in aiding the locals deemed as outcasts of society.

A subplot showed Manav taking a video of a Christian pastor baptizing a woman in the river. These scenes exemplify the risk taken by every Christian who goes to non-Christian countries. They are considered unwanted outsiders and their safety get placed in jeopardy.

There were two short scenes that show how common it is for us to judge people based on deformities that we see. The scene showed a leper got kicked out of a bus while another one gets booted out of a village. Due to the fact that they carry a contaminated disease.

These events showed that most people would rather throw them out and ignore the opportunity to help alleviate them from their condition.

Truth always seems to cost something. This line speaks volume in meaning as Manav continued to investigate Graham. We see the admiration in his eyes witnessing Graham’s relentless work. Considering he stoked the anger of Hindus at outreach by inciting that the head of the snake must be cut off.

His speech put Graham in constant danger. And as a result, they burned the Rover which causes the death of Graham and his kids. Manav felt guilty and seeks forgiveness from Gladys. She forgave him and continued the work of her husband. Gladys taught us the power of forgiveness to overcome hate.

The Least of These is a thought-provoking movie that narrates the life of a Christian missionary. The fact that Christians in some areas around the world are suffering from persecution. This movie is dedicated to everyone who served and sacrificed their lives to share the Gospel. And may this film serve its purpose so that we could bring everyone to love one another, especially the outcasts and the least of these.

New Hope: Facing Transitions in Life with God’s Guidance

New Hope

The film New Hope released in 2012 deals with the aftermath of teen suicide. It boldly tells a story about the depths of guilt and hurt in the lives of those affected by this tragedy.

Main character Michael and his family moved to a small town called New Hope. Being the son of a preacher, he is already accustomed to moving from place to place. What bothers him this time is adjusting to his new school in his senior year. Throughout the film, Michael showed us what it is like being a preacher’s son. Like any other teen, he confronts a dilemma of fitting in. The difference is that he valued his parents’ upbringing. He didn’t fight back his antagonist Lucas when he could. He didn’t take advantage of his liking for Jasmine when she was still feeling broken after losing her long-time boyfriend Chase who committed suicide a year ago.

This film has drawn its power to a commendable script. There were several noteworthy scenes. The preacher’s counseling session with Chase’s parents showed us grieving from their perspective. They showed how a mother’s love clings to guilt for as long as she could and a father who contains his hurt so he could keep his sanity day by day. These scenes reflect how each parent wants to get involved in our lives. The same goes with our heavenly Father God who can take our anguish so we don’t wallow in our sorrow for too long. We need to only ask and pray that He guides our way.

Lucas’ character is also powerful in this story. He used his ego to cover up his deep hurt for losing his brother Chase. Lucas pushed himself to become the star player in his school’s basketball team. He bullied Michael as a façade because he couldn’t admit to anyone he is feeling empty inside, not even his parents.

Another noteworthy scene was when he released his anger on a tree. He bought a handful of baseball bats and used each one to hit the tree. We get to feel the hurt he has and releasing it alone than hurting other people. Later on, Lucas admitted to Michael he feels he didn’t amount to anything. Michael reminded him about winning the championship game. He also mentioned not giving up on Lucas.

There were several nuggets of lessons in this film. It is suitable for teens as well as parents. It teaches us about bullying and where it is coming from. By having the right mindset to care for a bully and parental guidance to teens. We can also do it by reaching out to other people. And encouraging one another that God will guide us through no matter how difficult the trials that we encounter in our personal lives. Filling our hearts with God’s love will set us free from past hurts so we can move forward to a hopeful tomorrow.

Reconciliation: A Father’s Selfless Love

Reconciliation

The film Reconciliation released in 2009 takes us into a heartbreaking story between father and son Jeff and Grant who have lived separate lives in the last 24 years. The movie started with a scene of the father and son playing cards. Grant was happy and he loved his father. Fast forward to Grant’s adult life, his wife Sara complains about his being distant during her pregnancy period. Unknown to Sara, Grant had apprehensions about facing fatherhood. He hid from her about Jeff’s existence because his father is gay. These scenes show us how an unpleasant childhood affects us when we become adults.

Grant and Sara’s confrontation scene teaches us that marriage works by having trust and honesty with each other. Trust bonds a husband and wife to face life’s challenges together. Morality is the key so one can support the other. Sara demonstrates an encouraging wife who nudges her husband to soften his heart so he can make peace with his past.

There’s a brief scene where a preacher talks about self-hate and shame, and that all sins are forgivable when we repent to God. The sermon may also mean that prolonged sorrow we allow to linger for years cripples our soul. Self-doubt, when nurtured, may make us believe that we are less of a person we are. Society does not dictate our identity. We find our value in our relationship with God.

The story turned when Sara received a call informing that Jeff’s condition is terminal and requesting for his son Grant to see him in his remaining days. Grant’s hatred for Jeff may not come as intense as it was in his younger years. However, he still holds an invisible shield to keep his emotions at bay when he finally came face to face with his father at the hospital. These scenes remind us how old hurts hurt more the hater than the hated person. We get angry for a while that turns into hatred over time, and when numbness hits us, hate turns to indifference for as long as we can bear it. Grant was initially showing polite indifference towards Jeff until he gets confronted by his partner Patrick. His role is also of the essence of the story. He fills the gaps about Jeff’s life that Grant missed.

Finally, Jeff and Grant were able to tell their separate story after they parted ways. As it turns out, Grant’s father and mother kept their friendship until her passing. She was able to share snippets of his teenage life to Jeff. In turn, Grant told his pain of humiliation and what he went through to become a responsible Christian. What is beautiful in this story is the act of forgiving. It is the same as surrendering our brokenness to God. A father gives out his selfless love to his child much like Our Father in Heaven.

War Flowers Movie Review: A Tale of Sorrow and Hope

War Flowers

War Flowers: A Tale of Sorrow and Hope

The historical-drama film War Flowers deals with emotions from the perspective of a soldier’s wife and daughter. Set during the Civil War, Sarabeth and daughter Melody stayed at farmland. Sergeant John Ellis who owned this farmland joined the Confederate Army.

The story began with a brief scene of a shooting. Melody appeared by the windowpane wishing for his father to come home soon. Every child whose father is a soldier can relate to Melody’s longingness for a father’s presence. There’s always that special bond between a father and daughter. It was her doll and bear that connects her with her father. It kept her in believing that he will return.

What this movie is all about

There were several poignant scenes in the movie. Sarabeth has shown us her sorrow while reading her brother’s letter. She was looking for news about John. Another heartbreaking scene was when her baby Isaac died, and Melody saw how it broke her heart. The pain runs deep for a wife. She is uncertain about her husband’s fate. She’s a mother who is unable to save her baby from sickness while he was out at war.

These scenes explain why Melody kept the truth about her father’s death so her mother can continue to hope that he will be coming back for them. Apart from food shortage, there’s an unruly neighbor Rufus and soldiers who passed on their land while exchanging bullets in the air. Sarabeth needed to have the will to secure their safety and Melody made sure to remind her that the Lord is taking care of them.

Other notable characters were that of Gen. Mcintire and his son Lt. Louis. When his two sons fell in a close encounter, he told Louis he can give his life for the cause but does not want his remaining son to die at war. In an incident, one gentleman shot Louis. He was wounded and end up where Sarabeth is staying. Upon reaching back the Union line, his father ordered his men not to allow his son to cross the line again. The General knew that duties lead to repercussions while they fight in battle. In this case, a father only wanted to spare his son’s life.

What Sarabeth and Louis shared in their brief togetherness is a decent affection for each other. She knew her boundaries as a married woman, and he was a gentleman who respected the fact that both woman and child belongs to another man. Only after Melody confirmed her father’s death were they able to acknowledge looking forward to a future together. Sarabeth was a woman of dignity despite the hardships she faced. Louis was an honorable man.

The film War Flowers resonates to time for sorrow and a time for hope, a chapter in life that ends as the war ends and a new one begins.

Like a Country Song Movie Review

Like a country song

Like a Country Song Movie Review: An Emotional Tale of Ego and Reconciliation

Adversities happen to lead us to make life better and not bitter. The 2014 Christian drama film Like a Country Song tells a tale how ego impacts lasting hurts for and between one another. Lead character Jake Reeson was a rising country singer in a local town in Nashville. He ruins his budding career by partying and womanizing. His ego served as a façade to shield his pain growing up without a father. Many among us can relate to the kind of ego and pain that Jake had. We turn to our ego to show others that we are tough even when we are hurting inside.

Ego may come from past hurts that were not resolved and forgiven. Jake’s father Bo left him and his mother Mia after the untimely death of their daughter Lily. For years that passed, Bo harbored guilt and Mia made Jake believe that his father died when he was young. All three of them suffered from pain that lingered and affected them separately through the passing of time. By their characters, we may realize how important it is to face an accidental death of a daughter as a family. Instead of running away from the pain and pointing who to blame, Jake’s parents could have shown moral support for each other. It has taken years before Mia was able to forgive Bo. Those years in between could have given them three a period of moving on. Had their healing process came earlier, forgiveness and reconciliation could have happened sooner.

The turning point of the movie

The turning point in the story is when Jake’s old flame Becca gave him a Bible as she was about to leave him again and this time, it is for missionary work in Haiti. Jake reads Matthew’s verse about casting burden when one is weary and God will give him rest. On another scene, Bo turned to the same Bible verse for spiritual strength so he can face Mia again. It is when both Jake and Bo acknowledged their own faults that paved the way for their reconciliation as father and son.

Some incidents in our lives we may forget and yet, there are some that should have been forgiven. The underlying message content for this story was clear and that is every heart that’s been broke could be unbroken. We can correct all the lies and angry words that were once told to one another. Life’s trials may come as messy but when one is willing to make amends with an open heart, there will always be room for the truth, for accepting a fault, for mending the bond of a family and for moving on with a fresh new start.

China Cry Movie Review

China Cry

China Cry: Keeping Christianity under Communist Invasion

The Christian movie China Cry is a riveting drama based on the life story of the main character Sung Neng Yee who became Nora Lam. The setting was in Shanghai in 1941, a decade before China’s Great Revolution. The Sung family belonged to the privileged class. Neng Yee was their pampered princess. Her childhood lifestyle ended when the Japanese army invaded Shanghai. These scenes tell us how a war between nations affects people from all walks of life regardless of stature.

There were several heartbreaking scenes in this film. Dr. Sung got detained in the hospital for days and was unjustly accused of stealing a large amount of money from the hospital. Soldiers marked their door and forced them to leave the house. These scenes pushed her to desire her professors’ respect. She fulfilled a feat when she ranked third highest honor on graduation day. She claims it as a moment that eased their humiliation. It reminds us that those who suffered quietly the most strive harder to overcome trials in life and those whose hurt runs deep endures pain in suffering. For Neng Yee, her graduation was the quiet victory that made her become strong-willed.

The film intensively deliberated on the depth of Capitalism and Communism’s ideology. In that era, officials of the New China insinuate that machines will replace workforce in all professions in the future. They believe that societies will collapse due to modern technology that is why they must impose forced labor.

Neng Yee married Cheng Shen who migrated from HongKong. Both knew the repercussions of their union and yet, they chose to stand by each other until the end. Love and commitment held their marriage especially when each of them went under detailed questioning about their personal lives. Their character as individuals and couple teaches us about trust, holding on and letting go when the situation calls for it.

During her detention, she wrote about her experience in a Christian boarding school. She recalled the learnings of faith and initiated talking to God. A female soldier forced her to admit that she is a Christian. She was punished through a firing squad. Miraculously, a strong wind saved her. By then she knew it was God that saved her. She began to feel a promise of hope.

The family continued to suffer but this time, Neng Yee was hopeful. While looking for milk for her second newborn, she found a small Christian group that prayed together. She joined their sessions until they got raided. These scenes mean that even under a pressured condition, Christians will gather to encourage one another using the word of God.

Neng Yee fought for her family’s exit visa. Like planting seeds of faith, she trusted the Lord’s way of granting them their freedom, one day at a time.

Romero: An Archbishop’s Life as the Voice of the Church and its People

Romero

Romero: An Archbishop’s Life as the Voice of the Church and its People

The film Romero released in 1989 tells a biopic of a Salvadoran bishop named Oscar Romero who became an Archbishop during the military regime. The story set in 1977 when El Salvador was holding a presidential election in the midst of a troublesome society, guerilla uprising and public unrest.

The first subplot showed us how people risk their lives for their right to vote. Main character Bishop Romero was initially a mere spectator between what goes on with the government officials, the military, the bishops confederate, and the masses as he tries to stay apolitical.

Meanwhile, his friend Father Grande openly fights for the people’s rights. In their short chat, he says to Romero, “I cannot love a God that I cannot see if I don’t love my brothers and sisters that I can see.” Father Grande’s stance is that regardless of tribulations, the Church as well as we hold a moral responsibility towards our brethren in faith.

The scene where armed soldiers blocked the road and won’t allow voters from reaching the poll precinct has shown their determination to vote. No matter the threat, they proceeded to walk and be able to vote.

Father Romero became a hero to his people

To this day, these scenes speak about what’s really happening during an election in some areas of the world. These scenes tell us that whether it’s 1977 or 2018, situations may be different but the motive is still rooted in greed for power.

Another angle worth noting is the conspiracy within the Bishop confederate. They chose Bishop Romero to become Archbishop because they think of him as a compromise choice with a delicate health condition. This scene has shown us a good example of duplicity.  Sometimes, we need to look closely within the confines of our circle if those we trust are truly trustworthy.

In this case, the Bishops elevated Romero. And use him to influence the masses to stir away from government. There are many poignant scenes in this film. During the shooting at the town plaza, we see death and grieving all over the place. Archbishop Romero rejected the violent methods both of the guerillas and the military.

In the end, he got assassinated while consecrating the Eucharist during Mass. He risked his life being persecuted in a society permeated with injustice. Oscar Romero died but his influence to fight for peace and freedom in El Salvador goes on.

Polycarp: A Man of Unwavering Faith

Polycarp

Polycarp: A Man of Unwavering Faith

The story in the film Polycarp took its inspirations from the book “Polycarp: Destroyer of Our Gods” by Rick Lambert. Main character Polycarp was a known aged bishop and a disciple of John the Apostle. He stood as a leader to the followers of the teachings of Christ after the death of the Apostles.

The first subplot focused on Polycarp buying a slave girl for 50 denarii. She became an adopted child in their home. She listens while he preached within the household. However, she is adamant in believing their act of faith as her prayers are left unanswered.

As an audience, we relate to Anna’s emotions when we feel confused after being saved by an unnoticed divine intervention from any form of mishap. There’s still hesitation to look into faith when bad experiences in life outweigh the teachings we hear from religious leaders. In Anna’s case, she came to accept her fate upon knowing that both Germanicus and Polycarp got saved from slavery like herself.

Germanicus was Polycarp’s adoptive son who also serves as his messenger, tasked to deliver the scriptures to other Christian followers. Since the Roman government imposed on publicly worshipping only Caesar as God, the proconsul Quadratus orders to capture and kill those that refuse to renounce their faith. During one of his errands, Germanicus got captured.

However, he has kept his faith to the end. Polycarp mentioned to Anna that he ran to face the lions although it was not shown anymore. These scenes depict the picture of commitment to serve God regardless of circumstances.

Following the death of Germanicus, getting Polycarp captured and killed was the proconsul’s next agenda. Anna ran to his place to warn him. Instead of running away, he told her the analogy of the lampstand that intends to give light to many relating it to the purpose of his life. He stands for his faith amidst an impending persecution. He says one can always hope and one can always pray.

This act reminds us of Jesus Christ praying at the Garden of Gethsemane before he got captured. Polycarp, in the same way, prayed to God to prepare himself before facing Quadratus. He was calm and sure of himself as he defended God as the creator of man and that Caesar is only a man. His stance provoked the proconsul to declare that he has committed treason against Rome. Polycarp was burned at a stake.

The culminating scenes in this film speak volume in terms of losing life for Christ’s sake. In this era, preaching Christianity is still being persecuted in some parts of the world and yet, more Christians are out to spread the word.

Truly, passing on the teachings of our faith is what makes our life’s purpose well served. A grown-up Anna passing on her learnings to a girl in the cell before she faces her own death ended this story.
