Remember the Goal: Coaching the Pathway of Life

Remember the Goal

Remember the Goal takes place in a Christian school environment. It is Orange Hills’ first time to have a female coach. Main character Courtney just got out of college and was assigned to train an all-girls team. They will compete for cross-country race this season. Instead of pushing the girls to run faster, she instructed them to go slow that made her techniques questionable for both students and parents alike. They were quick to judge that she is unfit for the role.

In life, we meet people who are quick to judge us at face value especially when we work in a team. Some people forget that an individual’s cooperation contributes to teamwork. The top student runner Kristen did forget as she shows off to her coach that she runs faster than the rest of them.

The turning point was when Courtney kicked Kristen off the team for being defiant. As a result, Kristen got the other girls to quit with only five who stayed for training. Naysayers may influence our decisions but it is in ourselves that we determine which is a good or bad company for us.

There are disjointed subplots however, what’s good about this film were the short scenes showing each girl’s personal struggle. Ana’s dad pressures her to run faster so she can get a better rank off the charts. Rebecca’s mom was always scolding her about house chores. Heidi has an inferiority complex over Ana whom she thinks is always better than her. Katelyn’s father works far-away and missed to see her run in her earlier races. Shelby’s dad forbids her to date with boys at the age of 15.

The common problems among girls in middle school were brought up because it is where the role of parents, teachers or coaches comes into play. It is the stage in their lives where they needed guidance the most. We have seen here that Courtney’s advice and actions to guide the girls in the right pathway of life go beyond the sport and winning the game.

During their final practice, Courtney revealed the purpose of running at tempo pace and that is to build their endurance. She resembles practice with character building where patience, trust, and fortitude makes for a better athlete and a better person altogether.

Even in the race of life, we sometimes believe that getting ahead will lead us to achieve our goals faster. We press ourselves harder to win the race that we miss to see stumbling blocks on our way. We work harder that may end up wearing us down. That’s the lesson in this story.

The verse in Corinthians about whatever you do, do it for the glory of God means that winning is not the ultimate goal in life. Having the wisdom to rise up from adversaries may matter more. Our skills and wisdom came from God. We only need to acknowledge that in whatever we do.

Joy in Christ Jesus

Joy in Christ Jesus

Joy in Christ Jesus

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13)

Are you joyful with your life right now? How are you feeling right now? If you are not feeling joyful right now, what makes you feel lonely instead?

Does your heart leap with joy, the kind that genuinely comes from the inside? Yes, joy is different from happiness. Happiness is externally inspired while joy, on the other hand, can be founded on internal motivations.

God wills that we be joyful, experiencing it through the power of the Holy Spirit. As one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit, joy in Christ Jesus is meant to be experienced if we live in the Spirit.

“Rejoice in the Lord.” (Philippians 3:1)

This is a clear manifestation of God’s will for us to remain joyful. It’s not just about thinking happy thoughts; it’s more about a longer lasting feeling of satisfaction with God by our side.

Do we experience beauty in the works of God? If so, that is a joy as well. When you feel down and do not know what to do or who to turn to, remember that God wants us to experience joy and eternal pleasures.

These truths are in the form of God’s wisdom. God’s wisdom may not be the shortcut route we are imagining, however. We may encounter difficult times ahead when we follow God’s will. However, this is where authentic joy abounds.

The Bible, in fact, is filled with the ways to live and find joy in Christ Jesus. As long as we live up to these principles, we will definitely feel lasting joy. The Ten Commandments, for one, is a great source of tenets we can refer to when we feel lost. By honoring God and our parents, loving our neighbors, and caring for the people around us and for God’s creations, we can never go wrong.

Part of living with joy is resting in God’s promise of a great life as long as we trust in Him. Sure, there may be times when we underestimate God’s plans for us. We worry too much, ending up miserable because of the littlest things. And forget that God has an ultimate plan for us. We just have to have a firm trust in Him.

“You have turned my mourning into dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy.” (Psalm 30:11)

The verse above just states how God can readily turn our mourning into joy. It reminds us that God does not forget His promises. He loves us so much that He wants to bless us with everlasting joy and peace.

When we manifest a joyful heart and being, trust that it will radiate onto the others we encounter. We will serve as the gem in the pile of rocks, with God by our side. And bring light and life to the people around us. We will be instruments of joy, ready to spread this contagious feeling to the ones who need it the most.

The Shack Movie Review

The Shack movie Review

Discover what wonders God’s Healing can bring in, “The Shack”

An encounter with Papa that results in a pursuit of healing and forgiveness. This is the journey that, “The Shack” is putting its viewers into. The Shack takes things to a whole new level and illustrates the Christian faith and the Trinity more vividly.

The story begins with the lead character, Mack Philips. He started out as a kid with a vulgar and abusive father. As he came into his senses and after repetitive abuse, he came into the monumental angst to kill his own father.

The Christian movie turned relatively smoother after this chapter as Mack then grows up and started with a happy family with three kids. Conflict, however, rose up because of a family camp outing that they never knew would tear them apart. In contrary to the outing’s purpose of being a leisure outlet for the family, a tragedy occurred as Missy, youngest daughter, was stolen while Mack was rescuing his other children from boating. Investigations went on and they found Missy raped by a man.

This took Mack into a depressive chapter. A family that once was whole was torn apart in front of the lead character. In the midst of this dark segment, Mack received a letter from ‘Papa’ inviting him to go to a shack. Though resistant, at first, he submitted to the invitation and that led him to a vivid and unforgettable journey of his life.

As Mack got into the shack, things started out to be a stiff and cold surrounding to a bright and vibrant lush surrounding, where he meets the Son. The Son then took him into a house where he met the rest of the troupe- the Father and the Holy Spirit. His encounter with the ‘I am’ revealed Mack at his most naked and vulnerable just like David.

The trinity took Him into three days of healing and forgetting. He went into different activities during his encounter experience in order for him to realize that the Lord isn’t just someone who makes things beautiful on the surface, but rather cooks up something so intricate from the inside and grows out to be a processed beautiful jewel. Mack also got answers to certain questions and doubts about God’s parity and the abundance of His love.

A whole roller coaster ride with ‘Papa’ allowed Mack to start fresh with his family. He continues to live his life in a fuller sense. This also allowed him to heal the scars left by his traumatic childhood experiences. The loss of his daughter Missy. Moving forward, he now held better grasp of his role in the patriarchy- to be a good and loving spouse and also to lead his children to be closer to the Heavenly Father.

This movie shows its viewers that with every hurting and resentment comes a fresh beginning in Christ. Brokenness doesn’t always lead to a dark path but instead can be beautified when broken in front of the Lord. The challenge just lies in how Christians live a life of surrendering after encountering Him.

Intentionally resolving to be set apart for God

Intentionally resolving to be set apart for God

Intentionally resolving to be set apart for God

“But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king’s food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself.” – Daniel 1:8 ESV

The story of prophet Daniel, whose name means ¨God is my judge,¨ is an interesting reminder for God´s people, living in the present world, to strong willingly uphold their faithfulness to the Lord. It teaches modern-day Christians to remain steadfastly in the Lord, despite being presented with things that may sway them mentally, morally and spiritually.

In today´s generation, the worldviews and culture formed by people are changing for the worse day by day. People´s reasoning tends to be based on their own definition of right and wrong. The concept of ¨majority¨ is so powerful. What used not to have a sense or immorally unacceptable became the ¨normal¨ just because many people believe it is. People continuously fight to distort the standards set by God when he designed the entire creation.

For this very reason, defending their faith and the belief system set by the one true God, the Most High above all creations, became difficult, if not possible, for God´s children. However, that should not be the case. As in the life of Daniel, we should be prepared for whatever attempt of desecration that could fall upon us.

Even before Daniel, along with his friends, got summoned by then Babylon King Nebuchadnezzar, he already made the decision, not to ¨defile¨ himself. He desired to do only the things that are pleasing to God, to the extent that he would not even let the king´s food enter his mouth. Because of his faithfulness, Daniel found favor with man and with God.

The Lord even used Daniel to reveal Himself to the historic king Nebuchadnezzar, as it is written in Daniel 4.

In verse three, the king exclaimed, ¨How great are his signs, how mighty his wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion endures from generations to generation.¨

Holiness among modern-day Christians

What´s unfortunate about the present believers is that we claim to be Christians, but sometimes, even the most basic facet of the Gospel, we cannot fully explain to others. Worse, we do not, sometimes, absolutely understand why we believe what we believe.

The lesson, therefore, is to resolve – make a definite and serious decision – to know where we stand, what we believe in, and what we can and cannot tolerate as followers of Christ. We should challenge ourselves to be ready to defend the hope that we have in Jesus, even before the world attempts to refute it.

As apostle Peter puts it,

“But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil.” – 1 Peter 3:14-17 ESV

As we fervently wait for the Lord, persecutions and temptations will surely come our way as Christians. Ask God, therefore, that He would strengthen you and give you the courage to keep your holiness. So that the Lord may be glorified when the world sees how your practice great integrity, obeying God and being concerned about His acceptance more than what the world tries to offer.

Pray for Strength and Courage

praying image by Ben White

What to do when things get rough

With all the new projects, new jobs, new chapters in life. These are often started with enthusiasm and strong motivation. There’s enough itch that drives people to finish their task on time, or even ahead of it, always giving their best shot. After a couple of weeks, when all the deliverables and burden gets heavier when their circumstances get unbearable and stress starts to set in. As a result, negativity will overshadow the motivation and enthusiasm.

People felt threatened by so many things. Sometimes, quitting becomes an option than working things out and surviving the difficulties. They, more often than not, forget how they prayed so hard for the Lord to grant the desire of their hearts. Even the commitment they made with the Lord as they enter that new chapter blurs.

As God’s children, Christians should resolve to stop doing these things. And start clinging again to that chapter God has blessed them with.

Stop beating yourself

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” -Matthew 11:28-30

People resort to beating themselves. Trying to do things on their own even when they know they are already burnt out. There’s selfish pride that leads them to believe that they can make things right. But, instead of getting better, things keep on getting worse. Leading people to be hard on themselves for being not good enough.

This is in contrast to what Jesus declared when He said, “Come to me and I will give you rest.” As a follower of Jesus, the best thing to do when tired is take a step back, hide in Jesus and get filled by His presence. Yes, there is yoke and there is a burden, but with Jesus it is light.

Stop comparing yourself to others

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is enough for you, for my power is made perfect in your weakness.’ Thus I will boast all the more gladly of my weakness so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” -2 Corinthians 12:9

The enemy takes pleasure in feeding God’s children with insecurities. Which are evident when individuals keep on comparing themselves to others. They get so absorbed by proving that they are not the underdogs. And that they can keep up with the standards of the world and even get ahead of the competitors.

One thing to understand is that as creations, they are not supposed to live on their own ability. It is only by God’s grace that people achieve success. With this perspective, individuals would learn to stop relying on their own strength and start being proud of their weakness. For when people are weak, that’s the only time God can move in the lives of His children. There we will all be glorified.

Stop worrying, start hoping

“Cast all your fears on Him because He cares for you.” -1 Peter 5:7

Apostle Peter wrote this letter. He encourages Christians to be steadfast in the hope that they received from Jesus. Regardless of the trials, they should be like gold that the more they are cast on fire, the more they become refined.

So, whenever someone feels insufficient. He has to remind himself that he has an all-powerful, loving, Heavenly Father. That’s way bigger than the discouragements and difficulties in this world.

No worries are too big or too small for His attention. When His children give God their problems, He will never fail to hear them for He cares for them. He is certainly on their side!

Parents as Stewards of Grace

As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.1 Peter 4:10

Exposing Parents to the Millennial Era

Our parents’ stories were filled with values they have learned from their parents and elders. They also talk about outdoor games and sports they were able to enjoy during the time of their youth. Although these things still do exist, the Children of the Millennial Era spend more time interacting on Social Media than in person. As young as a toddler, a child already knows how to play games on an android phone or a tablet. By the time this child becomes a teenager, this child is more influenced by online peers than parents and teachers.

A Millennial Christian Child

Jamie is sixteen and spends more of her home hours online than speaking with her parents. She was raised by Christian parents with values intact. She studied in a Christian school in her primary years. When there’s a lot of academic and peer pressure revolving in her teenage life, she chose to keep her everyday battles within herself until she cries herself to sleep. In this situation, you may ask, where has any of her parents gone wrong?

Although she is protected spiritually and guided by good values within the confines of her home, there’s no denying that her exposure to social media every day can confuse her views towards what is appropriate and not, what is acceptable and not and what should be. With one click online, she gets an easy access to the discussion about trending news, different views and comments alike. Jamie is not alone. There may be one out of twenty millennial teen that prefers to spend hours online than confront daily problems encountered in school, in a sports team and even within the ministry group.

Christian Parents as Stewards of the Lord’s Grace

In the midst of the chaotic online world, a child’s behaviour development still begins at home. Parents still function as the child’s first teachers. Being Christian parents, it takes a huge responsibility to serve as good stewards of grace to their child or children. Before a child gets to learn to tick the android phone or clicking on the laptop, it is the parents who get to observe whether the child is following the path to Christianity.

The digital generation of youngsters poses a challenge for guidance. What they read, they absorb. What they absorb becomes part of their outlook in life. Their views from adolescence will direct their adult life and the way they interact with others.

As Christian Parents, a simple act of kindness and compassion shows how the Lord’s grace is manifested within and outside the family circle. Instead of criticizing the child’s physical and intellectual defect, finding ways to encourage the child with what can be improved can be more comforting. And for what cannot be changed, the Christian Parents are responsible to help the child understand that each individual has unique qualities and talents for it is a gift from the Lord.

Jamie’s case showed signs of withdrawing from personal touch and diverting herself towards her online world. Jamie’s parents could have taught her while young that it is okay to tell them her thoughts and emotions no matter how petty it seems. They could have talked about setting a schedule for using the internet beyond necessary for studies or for the parents’ end, for work-related matters.

No Christian Parent is perfect. As much as life is a continuous learning process, the same principle goes on a parenting journey. And each day can be an opportunity to teach a child that the Lord’s grace is greater than human resources.

Susie’s Hope is a must watch for those seeking healing and advocates of animal protection

shope
Normally when a person survives a horrific attack that person would feel traumatize and would hate the one who attacked him or her.
But Donna Lawrence took a less traveled road after she survived a vicious attack from a pit-bull owed by a neighbor. Instead of hating pit-bulls and dogs in general, Lawrence have learned to forgive the animal that almost killed her and she also become an advocate of animal rights.
The life story of Lawrence is chronicled in the healing Christian film Susie’s Hope. In the movie, after her pit bull attack Lawrence adopts a  pit bull-mix puppy, Susie, that has been beaten, set on fire, and left for dead. Together, they learn to heal, love, and forgive as they lead a historic effort to seek justice and protection for all animals.
In life, we can either hold grudges or we can forgive – and grow more than we ever thought possible because of it.
She could have used that attack to justify hating dogs, or having a bias against pit bulls that so many people possess but she used her unfortunate experience to promote animal protection and love.
