God’s Compass: Finding the North of a Life’s Purpose

For faithful workers of God, there’s always a burning desire to help others. This inspirational film depicts a walk of faith among the characters who explored God’s direction in their lives.

One night changed them. Suzanne celebrated her retirement as a school principal. Meanwhile, her surgeon son David was too busy with patients at the hospital that he neglects to care for his pregnant wife Jessica. She was with Suzanne that night but decided to go home earlier, leaving her mother-in-law at the party. Jessica was about to start the car when she felt labor pains. At that moment, a juvenile delinquent named Eli was trying to break into her car. Aghast to see her in pain, Eli’s only resolve was to drive her to the hospital. Shortly after their arrival, Eli got arrested by a cop who saw him there. These scenes showed us how one decision or act can alter our life and those we touch. Adding up to David’s stress was that the newborn is a blue baby and would need to undergo open-heart surgery to survive.

The story turned when Jessica asked Suzanne to act on Eli’s predicament. She appealed for Eli’s temporary custody even as David was against it. Following God’s calling, she puts her house up to pay his bail. Shortly after she brought him to her house, Eli took off with her car. He went back to the make-shift shelter but his sister Naomi was gone. Sometimes, we thought we have judged a person fairly as far as we know how. Actually, there’s more to a man’s story than what is plain to see. And that is where we begin to understand situations from a compassionate Christian perspective.

Each character fights a personal battle. Flashback scenes showed us snippets of their memory. Suzanne still feels the longing for her departed husband. The way she touched his clothes showed how much she missed him. She opened an old shoebox and found an old picture of her husband’s kidney donor which turned out as Eli’s father. The realization pressed her further to help out Eli. Meanwhile, Eli remembers his pain for losing both parents. Life has been hard for him since then. These scenes tell us that a wounded soul needs healing.

This film was filled with lessons. Suzanne and David’s relationship taught us mutual respect between mother and son. He may have opposed her decision about Eli but respected her actions nonetheless. David and Jessica’s relationship taught us openness and acceptance between husband and wife. He expressed his shortcomings to her. Jessica remained by his side to love and support him while they face their problems together.

The ending scenes reflect the real sense of God’s love for us. David found his life’s purpose through circumstances that he has faced. Their search for Naomi led him to see Eli’s make-shift shelter. That’s when he knew he could make a difference in their lives too.

Breakthrough: A Mother’s Unwavering Love

Breakthrough: A Mother’s Unwavering Love

The depth of a mother’s love is beyond measure. Based on true events, this film takes us to a roller coaster ride of emotions of a mother. The story opens with 14-year-old John intentionally doing and undoing things like a typical teenager. He gives his breakfast to the dog. Then he calls his dad by the first name and didn’t do his assignment on family history. These scenes show how a concerned mother makes an effort to connect to her teenage son.

After winning a basketball game in school, John went to a sleepover. The next morning, the three boys played over the frozen Missouri Lake despite knowing it’s not safe there. The plot took a turn when the ice suddenly cracks and the three boys fell on cold water. The two managed to emerge but John fell deeper.  Rescuers came to get John’s body. These scenes leave us to thinking that the boy could have avoided the accident if he heeded to the man’s warning. Stubbornness leads to a reckless tragedy.

Upon reaching the hospital, Joyce got confronted by the Doctor who explained their efforts to revive him and yet, John has no pulse for several minutes now.  She enters the room and cries out to God to send the Holy Spirit to breathe life into John. She touched his feet and miraculously, his pulse starts ticking again. The Doctor says John may become severely impaired once he wakens. Joyce showed us that no matter what the Doctor says, she keeps her faith in prayer that God listens to a mother’s plea.

There are reflective moments in this story. Joyce didn’t approve of the new pastor Jason and the changes he’s done at church service especially including rap music during praise and worship. Even so, Jason was the first person to comfort her in times of distress. He was by her side when she needed a friend the most. Sometimes, we too misjudge persons in our lives because we do not favor their ways. Later on, we find ourselves accepting them for who they are. The best part is when we realize that the one we used to frown upon turns out as a compassionate soul after all like Jason to Joyce.

John’s rescuer claims himself as an unbeliever. However, he believes he heard a voice when he plunged in the cold lake that led him to find the boy’s body. When they meet again, he told John that if God has plans for him, it may be something pretty special. The accident turned out as a life-changing experience both for the man who erstwhile thought there was no God and the boy who saw how many people have extended their help and prayers for a miracle.

While a mother’s love is a powerful force on Earth, God’s love for us makes a miracle possible.

The Adventures of Chris Fable: A Boy’s Symbolic Quest

The Adventures of Chris Fable

The Adventures of Chris Fable: A Boy’s Symbolic Quest

The Adventures of Chris Fable is an imaginative film that tells the story of a runaway boy named Chris who lives on thieving for a Fagin-like character Iggy. The preacher Evangeline caught him pilfering inside the church and held him to return the candlesticks. She mentioned The Bible as the most important book, so he took it along with other books he got in his bag. Iggy says that books are worthless and he wanted metals only.

He serves a master called the prince and the children in the junkyard were all his servants. Chris had a nightmare that there was chaos in the land which brought him back to Evangeline. He confessed that his father was a fisherman. He didn’t want his kind of life and rules, so he stole his father’s money and lost them all along the way. Evangeline coaxed him to find his father. She said that he would forgive all his sins and take him back.

These scenes remind us about ourselves going astray from the rules of our heavenly father. All of us are sinners, and we need to search for the path that will bring us back to Him.

Another thought to ponder was the bag that Chris carries in this journey. It represented the excess baggage we find difficult to let go. We think it is part of our being even when it weighs us down. Chris showed that when he encountered The Cross, he immediately it all.

The film presented it in symbolic form meaning the characters that Chris encountered in his quest represented a trait in a human soul including Faith, Hope, and some persons who acted as distractions to his path. Much like a life’s course in itself.

We have a lot of distractions such as getting what we want at an instant and staying in a comfort zone like Electric City. We indulge into a mirage of worldly pleasures that gets us sidetracked from our pursuit to spiritual enlightenment. Following Evangeline’s advice, we should remove our eyeglasses filled with deceit that blocks us from seeing the truth that lay before us.

There were characters too whose purpose was to show up and help Chris in times of his distress. One police offered his whip so Chris can get out of the sticky pond. A man named Grant told Chris hero stories and taught him to use a sword. These characters represent our good-natured friends. Friends who guide us, cares for our welfare and protect us against harm’s way whenever necessary.

The core message in this story is choosing to go the narrow gate instead of the wide one for it leads to destruction while the narrow path leads to Celestial City or a hopeful land. As viewers to this tale, parental guidance is recommended. The presentation fits early teens; however, the meaning of some scenes needs a further explanation so the youngster can relate it to Christianity.

Grace Unplugged: A Plug and Play between Dreams and Realities

Grace Unplugged

Grace Unplugged tells a story about a teenage daughter and dad relationship. Having just turned 18, Grace felt that singing alongside her dad Johnny at the worship band was constraining her. She felt that she’s missing opportunities elsewhere. She grew up knowing that her father was a famous rock star.  Who hit the charts on Billboard and she was only a shadow of his fame. She becomes defensive in having her way with her life.

Regardless of a Christian upbringing, most teens are out to prove to their parents that they have gone past childhood. Believing they can handle life’s issues without their upper hand. Grace only knew her dad as a singer.  But she missed to realized his love for family and God that outweighs fame.

The story came to a turn when Johnny’s former manager Mossy came to visit. His father’s former boss offered to include him on tour but he declined. Grace recorded her version of Johnny’s hit song Misunderstood and emailed it to Mossy. After a heated argument with her dad, Grace boldly goes to LA to pursue a singing career. Her naiveté towards her new audience excites her. Having a car, her place, getting dressed up by an image maker and meeting the boss of Sapphire Music provided temporary happiness.

These scenes remind us about having desires that please our eyes and feelings. But it diverts our attention away from God.

Ego overcame Grace that she turned her back when dad asked him to come home. She enjoyed the cheers and the spotlight, but when she’s in her room, she felt the loneliness of being alone and away from home. Grace learned that her new circle of people has underlying motives and adding up the pressure to compose a new song, she felt losing her game.

The self-pressure we impose upon ourselves is no different from what Grace has shown us. We have ego instead of acknowledging that we needed God’s direction and our elders’ guidance to show us a better way than we think we are capable of doing.

Amidst the odds, Grace kept her morals like when she walked out on the TV personality upon overhearing his plans to take her to his place. Another was when she resisted the song about the one-night stand. Quentin who handles Grace’s wardrobe became an unlikely friend. Incidentally, he and his Christian family has seen Grace and Johnny sing together at church a while back. It reminded Grace about getting back into God’s favor. He gave her a book that she read while on the tour that helped her realize that her family and the church was her home.

In a nutshell, the film tells us that all of us may fall short in our roles in life, be it a parent or a child. When we do, we can always turn to God’s love to keep us connected in spite of differences in perspective.

Stand Strong: Overcoming Test of Faith

Stand Strong

The film Stand Strong tells about main character Matt Webster and his family who were having a materialistic way of living. The opening scenes showed the lifestyle of each of Matt’s family members. We see that Matt is busy with work while his wife Tara gets preoccupied in pleasing her rich friends than giving attention to their youngest child.  They often left Cameron in the house with a maidservant. The two teens Megan and Brendan attended to their hobbies and friends.

Each of them created a little world outside the family to cover up their lack of support towards one another. Their set-up was akin to most of us who look up to lifestyle than have meaningful relationships at home and work, in school or with friends. Consciously or not, our focus goes to the image of affluence where we thrive. When this level of comfort and security gets shaken, that’s where the trouble begins.

Matt’s predicament came into view when the company he works for started cutting jobs. He tracked house payments and his family’s expenses. Tara overspent on her credit cards. Brendan and Megan often went out with their separate set of friends. As head of his family, Matt decided to cut back which dismayed them. Wives can reflect on Tara’s malpractices. As a wife and mother, her duty was to support her husband’s decisions in curbing their expenses and not rant on him when her cards got declined.

After losing their house to foreclosure, Matt’s family moved in to live under his brother Josh house. His mother declined to bail him this time so he’d learn to manage his family and finances on his own. Tara and Megan grow up with a servant and this situation tested Rachel’s patience. Good thing Rachel chose to pray for extended patience than quarrel with Tara. Had acceptance came into their hearts sooner, it could have eased their adjustment period as part of another household. Ego usually gets in the way before humility sets. Matt and his family experienced this kind of situation. Josh offered to help Matt with what he knows about dealing with finances based on principles from the Bible.

Another test of fate was when Cameron fell from a rocky cliff after following Brendan who climbed on top of it. Filled with guilt about his brother getting hurt, Brendan was remorseful and turned to the Bible for guidance. Matt saw this and bridged the gap between their father and son relationship. He noticed Brendan’s artistic talent and came to work with him on a digital marketing project. Matt also reached out to Megan to restore their father and daughter bond.

The film Stand Strong depicts factors that make up for character building between husband and wife, parents and children, an individual and family that stands steadfastly. Towards the end, they all learned from each other that made them hold together as a family again.

Reconciliation: A Father’s Selfless Love

Reconciliation

The film Reconciliation released in 2009 takes us into a heartbreaking story between father and son Jeff and Grant who have lived separate lives in the last 24 years. The movie started with a scene of the father and son playing cards. Grant was happy and he loved his father. Fast forward to Grant’s adult life, his wife Sara complains about his being distant during her pregnancy period. Unknown to Sara, Grant had apprehensions about facing fatherhood. He hid from her about Jeff’s existence because his father is gay. These scenes show us how an unpleasant childhood affects us when we become adults.

Grant and Sara’s confrontation scene teaches us that marriage works by having trust and honesty with each other. Trust bonds a husband and wife to face life’s challenges together. Morality is the key so one can support the other. Sara demonstrates an encouraging wife who nudges her husband to soften his heart so he can make peace with his past.

There’s a brief scene where a preacher talks about self-hate and shame, and that all sins are forgivable when we repent to God. The sermon may also mean that prolonged sorrow we allow to linger for years cripples our soul. Self-doubt, when nurtured, may make us believe that we are less of a person we are. Society does not dictate our identity. We find our value in our relationship with God.

The story turned when Sara received a call informing that Jeff’s condition is terminal and requesting for his son Grant to see him in his remaining days. Grant’s hatred for Jeff may not come as intense as it was in his younger years. However, he still holds an invisible shield to keep his emotions at bay when he finally came face to face with his father at the hospital. These scenes remind us how old hurts hurt more the hater than the hated person. We get angry for a while that turns into hatred over time, and when numbness hits us, hate turns to indifference for as long as we can bear it. Grant was initially showing polite indifference towards Jeff until he gets confronted by his partner Patrick. His role is also of the essence of the story. He fills the gaps about Jeff’s life that Grant missed.

Finally, Jeff and Grant were able to tell their separate story after they parted ways. As it turns out, Grant’s father and mother kept their friendship until her passing. She was able to share snippets of his teenage life to Jeff. In turn, Grant told his pain of humiliation and what he went through to become a responsible Christian. What is beautiful in this story is the act of forgiving. It is the same as surrendering our brokenness to God. A father gives out his selfless love to his child much like Our Father in Heaven.

Like a Country Song Movie Review

Like a country song

Like a Country Song Movie Review: An Emotional Tale of Ego and Reconciliation

Adversities happen to lead us to make life better and not bitter. The 2014 Christian drama film Like a Country Song tells a tale how ego impacts lasting hurts for and between one another. Lead character Jake Reeson was a rising country singer in a local town in Nashville. He ruins his budding career by partying and womanizing. His ego served as a façade to shield his pain growing up without a father. Many among us can relate to the kind of ego and pain that Jake had. We turn to our ego to show others that we are tough even when we are hurting inside.

Ego may come from past hurts that were not resolved and forgiven. Jake’s father Bo left him and his mother Mia after the untimely death of their daughter Lily. For years that passed, Bo harbored guilt and Mia made Jake believe that his father died when he was young. All three of them suffered from pain that lingered and affected them separately through the passing of time. By their characters, we may realize how important it is to face an accidental death of a daughter as a family. Instead of running away from the pain and pointing who to blame, Jake’s parents could have shown moral support for each other. It has taken years before Mia was able to forgive Bo. Those years in between could have given them three a period of moving on. Had their healing process came earlier, forgiveness and reconciliation could have happened sooner.

The turning point of the movie

The turning point in the story is when Jake’s old flame Becca gave him a Bible as she was about to leave him again and this time, it is for missionary work in Haiti. Jake reads Matthew’s verse about casting burden when one is weary and God will give him rest. On another scene, Bo turned to the same Bible verse for spiritual strength so he can face Mia again. It is when both Jake and Bo acknowledged their own faults that paved the way for their reconciliation as father and son.

Some incidents in our lives we may forget and yet, there are some that should have been forgiven. The underlying message content for this story was clear and that is every heart that’s been broke could be unbroken. We can correct all the lies and angry words that were once told to one another. Life’s trials may come as messy but when one is willing to make amends with an open heart, there will always be room for the truth, for accepting a fault, for mending the bond of a family and for moving on with a fresh new start.
