Letters to God Movie Review: A Story of Linking Prayers and Finding Hope

Thoughts and words are much better when written than spoken as some people would have it. The Christian movie “Letters to God” tells a story of a boy named Tyler who is suffering from cancer and corresponds to God every day. He sends his letter to the postman in the hopes that it will reach God. This innocent, childlike gesture showed us how to tell God our wishes and worries about ourselves and the people around us in written form. The boy believed in having a friendship with God, and this act encourages us to do the same.

Several scenes in this film showed unconditional love, compassion, and hope. Tyler’s mother Maddie is a widow who juggles her hours as a nurse in a children’s hospital at night and a caring mother to her two sons during the day. Tyler knew about his mother’s sacrifices on his behalf that all he wished is for God to send someone who can make his mother smile again. When we do get entangled in a situation beyond our control.  We could only wish for better things to happen primarily to the people who matter in our lives.

The turning point in the story happened when the alcoholic Brady replaced the regular postman who took leave. He found himself conflicted on what to do with Tyler’s letters to God. His boss lets him have his way with them, so he resorted to leaving them in their local church. The pastor told him that there’s a purpose why the letters fell in his hands. They prayed over before going to the church. Moved by the scene in the church, Brady recalled the past hurts that led him to become alcoholic. It gives us a realization that when a person gets broken. There’s a process of healing and restoration to look forward.

Brady is drawn to Tyler’s positivity every day. He attempts to make his day a little happier. Like when he pleaded Maddie to allow Tyler to play football in spite of his limitations. This tells us that no matter how difficult the trials we go through, there’s still a chance for a pleasant day in simple ways.

The film showed Tyler as a supportive brother and a good friend. He forgives his classmate who said hurtful remarks about his condition. Guided by Jesus’ teachings, he wanted to show others what compassion means to him. From Tyler’s last hours to his passing, Brady used Tyler’s letters to inspire more people to write to God. The film closes with snippets of other people who battled Cancer and kept their faith. Letters speak about thoughts left unspoken. Letters to God speaks about prayer bearing hope for one another. The end of one’s life may give direction and meaning to another life story.

Unconditional Movie Review: A Story of Walking Past the Clouds in Life

Inspired by a true story, Unconditional is a drama film released in 2012 with an aim of encouraging its audience to reach out and serve others.

The film revolved around Sam and Joe who were childhood friends. The story started with Sam narrating about her husband getting killed and how it pained her to lose him to the point that she wanted to kill herself.

All of us at one point in our lives have lost a loved one regardless of kinship. The grieving process is truly difficult to endure. Some people’s hurts take far longer than others. What hurts the most is losing someone and not knowing how it is to live without the one that was lost such as in the case of Sam.

Just as when Sam was about to shoot herself in a dark alley, she heard kids being chased in the streets until one got hit by a car. Sam brought the kids to the hospital where by chance, she meets Joe again after 20 years.

Joe’s role was like a guardian to children with no father in their underdeveloped small community. The hospital scenes in this film showed us the gesture of looking out for someone not related to us. It is a good example of serving others.

Another way is how Joe spends some time to sit down and teach kids about caring for one another. He demonstrated that being a guardian and a teacher is a free opportunity for everyone who is up for the role. He acts as a father even when he has no child of his own. He is a like a teacher outside the confines of school. His intention was clear and that is making a difference in the children’s upbringing whether they have parents or not to guide them.

On a personal note, Joe’s kidneys have already shut down and relied on Dialysis. He told Sam about being on top of his class in Engineering, having a nice job, got influenced by friends to hack a bank and this failed attempt led him to spending 8 years in prison where he got consumed by pride and ego because his father left him, asked God’s forgiveness during his 40 days solitary period until he got released from prison and became part of the community.

The hills and valleys in our life’s course are part of our life’s purpose. Sam thought the death of her husband is her dead-end but Joe made her realize through his life story that it isn’t a dead-end if it takes her somewhere she needed to go. That’s pressing forward despite trials that come our way. It will always be our choice whether we make ourselves a better person out of it or otherwise.

Taking the entirety of the film into account, the core message is that no storm can take the sun away as much as God’s love for each one of us is constant. We just need to walk past the clouds in order for us to see the sunshine again.

Facing the Giants Movie Review

Facing the Giants

Facing the Giants Movie: A Uplifting Story of Facing Obstacles in Life

When you watch the trailer of Facing the Giants movie, you would think that it may revolve around challenges in being a part of a football team. You would think perhaps that it deals with the role of the coach, attitudes that make up for teamwork and how to win a game. It is certainly more than that. It is more than the elements of football, losing, fighting back and winning.

The main character Grant Taylor is the head coach of Shiloh Eagles for six consecutive years. He has not led the team to a winning season yet so after three losses on the seventh season, the players’ fathers wanted to have him replaced. Aside from his leadership dilemma, he learned that he is the reason his wife Brooke is unable to conceive. These problems meant career and personal lives separately. All of us get to experience facing problems in both areas of our lives and it sometimes happens at the same time. The important message here is that we take the problems one at a time so that the weight of the burden does not overwhelm us. Grant showed us to turn to God in moments of desperation.

What became the turning point in the story is when Grant dared his team members to believe in God and in their ability to conquer disappointments. Grant made them realize that there’s still a chance to give their best shot in the next game. Life in itself is like a game. There’s a season for losing, hoping and winning. Determination presses us to move forward until we overcome trials in life. Depression may cripple our emotions for a while. However, it is hoped that serves as a torch that ignites our spirit to carry on.

As for Grant’s infertility, it demonstrated to us a situation beyond our control. There is always a purpose why certain things happen to us and why certain things didn’t happen the way we expect them. Suffering may mean to happen in order for us to realize that we are being led towards a different path or purpose in life.  Grant may not get to become a biological father but served as a second father to his players.

In a nutshell, Facing the Giants movie teaches us the value of leadership and in creating an impact in the lives of those we lead. Furthermore, we have seen hope and courage not only in the playing field but in fighting off personal battles too. Indeed, this is more than a sports movie. It is about the spiritual strength that builds up character. This strong spirit is what we can hold on to so trials are unable to break us apart when we fall and can sustain us when we rise up again after the fall.

God’s Not Dead 2

God's Not Dead

How Christian Faith put on trial in “God’s Not Dead 2”

“But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honour Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defence to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you…” -1 Peter 3:14-15

Who would think that just another class discussion and a sudden conversation about Jesus Christ will put not only a middle school teacher but also the whole Christian faith into the rial?

This is exactly what happened in God’s Not Dead 2. The second installment is also plotted in the academic horizon; but this time, an educator is the one put on trial.

The conflict arose when the correlation of Jesus Christ’s teachings to that of Martin Luther was tackled during a class recitation. This hugely enraged the school administrators, putting middle school teacher, Grace Wesley, into a bad light. The school staff tried to appease the situation by asking Wesley to apologize for mentioning Jesus in her class.

Wesley, however, held onto her faith and rejected the proposition. She chose to defend her side and opted to resolve things in court.

However, Wesley’s defence was not strong enough. He needs to win over the testimonies of the opposing party. Her position just kept on worsening, even her student showed up in the court to stand against her.

The court was able to press on to the conclusion that aside from discussing Christ as a historical figure, she also tried to integrate religion in a non-sectarian institution.

The threat of losing the case provoked Wesley and her lawyer, Jesse Metcalfe to charge up their defence. They started to team up in digging hard pieces of evidence to prove that Jesus Christ is a real person who existed and walked the earth, and not a mere superstition.

Metcalfe explained that the story of Jesus’ resurrection isn’t just a telltale story people based from Homer’s Illiad and Odyssey, but a true occurrence in a point of history.

On the final hearing, Metcalfe came into the court enraged and put his client on the witness stand. He then began to expose Wesley’s passion for Christ. This hugely made Wesley worry because she thought that her Bible beliefs will just shatter all the defences they made. In the end, the battle was worth it. They successfully defended the case.

God’s Not Dead 2 is indeed a must-watch movie. This is for someone who wants to be thrilled. Or someone who has a hint of doubt towards his belief in Christ. This Christian movie online truly proves a number of things. Christianity is also one of the most significant worldviews history has unravelled before us. Prepare to see Christianity under a new light and have you inner Strobel be ignited!

The Shack Movie Review

The Shack movie Review

Discover what wonders God’s Healing can bring in, “The Shack”

An encounter with Papa that results in a pursuit of healing and forgiveness. This is the journey that, “The Shack” is putting its viewers into. The Shack takes things to a whole new level and illustrates the Christian faith and the Trinity more vividly.

The story begins with the lead character, Mack Philips. He started out as a kid with a vulgar and abusive father. As he came into his senses and after repetitive abuse, he came into the monumental angst to kill his own father.

The Christian movie turned relatively smoother after this chapter as Mack then grows up and started with a happy family with three kids. Conflict, however, rose up because of a family camp outing that they never knew would tear them apart. In contrary to the outing’s purpose of being a leisure outlet for the family, a tragedy occurred as Missy, youngest daughter, was stolen while Mack was rescuing his other children from boating. Investigations went on and they found Missy raped by a man.

This took Mack into a depressive chapter. A family that once was whole was torn apart in front of the lead character. In the midst of this dark segment, Mack received a letter from ‘Papa’ inviting him to go to a shack. Though resistant, at first, he submitted to the invitation and that led him to a vivid and unforgettable journey of his life.

As Mack got into the shack, things started out to be a stiff and cold surrounding to a bright and vibrant lush surrounding, where he meets the Son. The Son then took him into a house where he met the rest of the troupe- the Father and the Holy Spirit. His encounter with the ‘I am’ revealed Mack at his most naked and vulnerable just like David.

The trinity took Him into three days of healing and forgetting. He went into different activities during his encounter experience in order for him to realize that the Lord isn’t just someone who makes things beautiful on the surface, but rather cooks up something so intricate from the inside and grows out to be a processed beautiful jewel. Mack also got answers to certain questions and doubts about God’s parity and the abundance of His love.

A whole roller coaster ride with ‘Papa’ allowed Mack to start fresh with his family. He continues to live his life in a fuller sense. This also allowed him to heal the scars left by his traumatic childhood experiences. The loss of his daughter Missy. Moving forward, he now held better grasp of his role in the patriarchy- to be a good and loving spouse and also to lead his children to be closer to the Heavenly Father.

This movie shows its viewers that with every hurting and resentment comes a fresh beginning in Christ. Brokenness doesn’t always lead to a dark path but instead can be beautified when broken in front of the Lord. The challenge just lies in how Christians live a life of surrendering after encountering Him.

Quotes from the movie War Room

The War Room

Awaken the warrior in you with these movie quotes from the movie War Room.

How do you fight your battles? There are times when we question why our circumstances are so difficult to bear. Despite the fact that we´ve been giving our best effort to win our battles, it seems that all efforts lead us to anything but winning.

Learn from the 13 quotes below taken from the Christian movie “War Room,” a film by Alex and Stephen Kendrick. It’s a story of Elizabeth and Tony Jordan, and their daughter Danielle.

Their family almost ended up in a wreck because the couple finds it difficult to understand each other. They always disagree on things that would make the viewers think that they do not love each other anymore. Despite being Elizabeth as a real estate broker and Tony as a salesman for a pharmaceutical company, both chasing their careers while there is lingering unhappiness in their home. Affected by the obvious tension, Danielle also grew indifferent of being in their home and even hated seeing her parents together.

Everything changed, however, when the Lord used one of Elizabeth´s clients, Miss Clara, to introduce to Elizabeth the concept of a ¨war room¨ and the right way of fighting whatever battles she´s facing.

Quotes from Christian movie “War Room”

“To win the fight, you’ve got to have the right strategy and the right resources, because victories don’t come by accident.” -Miss Clara

“Just because you argue doesn’t mean you fight well.” -Miss Clara

“God is still in control. It encourages me.” -Miss Clara

“If you want victory you must first surrender” -Miss Clara

“I shouldn’t fight God because He always wins.” -Miss Clara

“In order for this family to function, we need to communicate.” –Elizabeth Jordan

“Submitting to your husband is so you can duck so the Lord can hit your husband!” – Mandy

“You need to plead with God to do what only He can do, and then you need to get out of the way and let him do it.” -Miss Clara

“Everyone’s always trying to leave Jesus out, which is one reason we’re in the mess we’re in.” -Miss Clara

“I’m not done with us… I am His before I am yours. And because I love Jesus, I’m staying right here.” -Elizabeth Jordan

“He gives us grace and he helps us to give it to others, even when they don’t deserve it.” -Miss Clara

“I would rather have a man chasing Jesus than a house full of stuff.” -Elizabeth Jordan

“Raise up warriors, Lord, that will fight on their knees who will worship you with their whole hearts.” -Miss Clara

A “war room” is basically a portion of the house, free from any distraction, where you converse with God peacefully. Its idea was taken from Matthew 6:6 where Jesus said, “But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

Surrendering was, at first, something that Elizabeth did not take seriously. But when she realized that she’s actually losing the battle because she keeps on fighting with her own strength, that’s when she fully surrendered to God. That’s the turning point of everything. The Lord started to move in their lives, correcting the couple’s attitude towards one another, their character, and even how they play their roles as Danielle’s parents.

In the end, everything turned from bad to good and the family lived happily. All because they decided to make things right with the Lord and let Him do the fighting for them.

Bonus:

Elizabeth´s declaration of victory after going out of her war room, ¨I don’t know where you are, Devil, but I know you can hear me. You have played with my mind and had your way long enough! No more! You are done! Jesus is the Lord of this house, and that means there’s no place for you here anymore!

So take your lies, your schemes, and your accusations and get out in Jesus’ name! You can’t have my marriage, you can’t have my daughter and you sure can’t have my man! This house is under new management and that means you are out! And another thing, I am so sick of you stealing my joy, but that’s changing too.

My joy doesn’t come from my friends, it doesn’t come from my job, it even doesn’t come from my husband. My joy is found in Jesus, and just in case you forgot, he has already defeated you, so go back to Hell where you belong and leave my family alone!¨

Childlike Faith: I Believe Movie Review

childlike faith

I Believe: The Meaning of Childlike Faith

I Believe demonstrated how to have faith similar to a child. The main character is 9-year old Brian who has parents that are unbelievers of God and Christianity. In a scene where Brian’s father openly tells him that there is no God, he attempts to persuade the belief of the child.

We relate to this scene as most of us get influenced by the people around us. Influence is not synonymous with having a personal belief in something especially God. What our parents, relatives and friends believe may or may not sync with our own. We uphold our belief regardless of other people’s convictions.

Brian was assigned to write about pilgrims in his class. Aside from the assignment, his innocent curiosity led him to exert an extra effort to research further about Jesus, His teachings and His works. The teacher did remind him not to turn into a fanatic. Despite the comment, the smart boy pressed on to learn more about Jesus.

He uses different channels including the internet, buying a Bible and visiting the church for the first time. We too have a gut-feel experience like this. We persistently look for answers to satisfy our curiosity with facts that concerns our belief in God.

Brian’s act of prayer and an unwavering act of sharing his faith led to miracles that made him newsworthy. The boy’s faith in the power of prayer has convinced those lives he touched to believe including the US Marine and the woman who has a blind baby. In this modern age, there are many among us who do not believe in miracles anymore.

Only when we open our hearts do we get to see miracles happen in our lives. And by giving thanks with a grateful heart, we expand the width and the length of our faith in God.

Another scene worth mentioning was when Brian abducted by a mob. The leader asked the boy if God listens to him and his reply was it is the opposite, it is he who listens to Him. The intention was to strain the boy’s faith and destroy him from making the headlines. When the little girl was shot. Brian prayed for her quick recovery.

There will always be a set of bad people who are out there to inflict physical or psychological harm. They will be out to test where our faith lay. Sometimes, all it takes is a childlike faith to keep us grounded. Against whatever odds that come and passes through our course in life.
